Why you shouldn’t use a digital marketing agency

Woah there, that’s a new one, an agency that’s telling you why you shouldn’t use a digital marketing agency.

Ok, here’s the deal. We don’t consider ourselves to be an agency, and I’ll tell you why.

We used to be in your shoes…

In 2014 I worked for a financial services group running their marketing department. I say department but really I was a team of one.

We outsourced all of our digital marketing to agencies and I was deeply frustrated with the results. Every day I was remind how these agencies were “the best places to work” and “full of top graduates with rocket science degrees” but what I never really understood was how they added value to my campaigns and what they actually did all day!

We’re not a digital agency…

If this sounds familiar then you’ll understand why I hate Report Central being called an agency; if anything we’re a digital anti-agency because we were born out of a total frustration with the agency concept.

To me a digital marketing agency is bright colours, modern office spaces, ping pong tables and fake grass coffee areas. What an anti-agency provides is boring desk spaces and epic results.

Ok, boring desk spaces might not be true but the fact is a digital agency should be results driven rather than driven by how cool their office space looks.

You’re much more capable than you think you are…

So back in 2014 I made a decision to ditch the agencies and learn digital marketing for myself. It was the best thing that I ever did. Over the subsequent years I hired a team of experts in fields like google adwords and hubspot to join me on my anti-agency journey and turn around the campaigns that had been so poorly managed by the very people other called experts.

Digital marketing is not rocket science unless you’re at the very top of your game. Eighty percent of businesses frankly don’t need that level of marketing genius to succeed. There’s lots of things you can do on your own to both save the money of an agency and make your campaigns work; all you have to do is realise that these agencies aren’t anywhere near as good as their awards say they are.

In the world of digital marketing, digital marketing agencies are amazing at selling themselves but not your products and if they can’t make you money then what’s the point?

Is average good enough?

So what you need to decide is whether you need to strap a rocket to your bottom line or not.

Will average do? If it will (and there’s nothing wrong with being average) then you can go a long way by building your own marketing team. If not, then you need to find a results driven anti-agency that can cut through the smoke and mirrors and really drive your business forward.

I’m aware that this all sounds well and good but the proof is in the pudding. Luckily we have the pudding to prove it. What we do very differently…

So imagine we were sat in your shoes way back in 2014. What things mattered to us? To an agency it’s lead volumes, but to me it was getting more customers and increasing our profits.

As an anti-agency then, we needed to turn this whole digital marketing thing on its head and stop chasing leads.

What we realised was quite simple. Not all leads are created equal, in fact some leads might be super expensive but they also have a conversion rate that’s so high their overall cost per sale is lower than the really cheap leads.

When you set up your systems to find out what leads to sales and what doesn’t then you can begin to make some really big calls that no agency would make; sacrificing lead numbers.

At Report Central we would much rather go after 5 leads that generate £100,000 each than get 50 leads that only generate £1,000.
